Unlocking Livestock Opportunities in Canada: Enhancing Soybean Meal Exports from North Dakota

Completed

Project Summary
The soybean processing industry is poised for significant growth in the coming years, creating new domestic opportunities for soybean consumption. The increasing crush capacity not only provides more outlets for farmers to sell their beans but also boosts soybean meal and oil availability in the domestic market. Presently, 23 plant expansions have been announced, with a projected addition of approximately 750 million bushels per year in crush capacity. This expansion is expected to alter the interstate flow of soybeans, bringing forth a more affordable feed option for livestock. The proposed project aims to evaluate the potential and barriers to export soybean meal from North Dakota (ND) to livestock producers in Canada. This comprehensive analysis will include examining trade barriers, transport infrastructure, and market price dynamics. Both quantitative assessments and qualitative analyses of supply chain issues will be conducted, involving key stakeholders in transportation and end-use industries in ND and Canada.
Objectives
Determine the feasibility of exporting soybean meal from ND to Canada.
